On the evening of May 24th we enjoyed a very nice dinner at Famous Dave's Bar-B-Q on Cedar Bluff Road. The program for the evening was "The Flying Boatmen" presented by Steve Early. The Flying Boatmen were a group of "Aquabatic" power boaters who strived to recreate some of the chilling maneuvers performed by airplane pilots in an on-the-water setting. They have been featured on the Heartland Series. Steve had color video footage taken off of the Gay Street Bridge during the early 1950's. It was fascinating to watch the distinctive all aluminum Feathercraft boats being put through their paces. The boats were very popular in the early years of power boating. Steve owns two "mint condition" examples and brought one so we could all go out to the parking lot to admire the lines and craftsmanship. Our thanks to Steve and his father Jim (one of the original Flying Boatmen) for sharing their love for these unique boats, and Bob Rodgers, the web master for the Feathercraftboats.com website. For more information, please visit their website or search for Feathercraft Boats on your search engine.
